This air fryer open-faced pork sandwich is a simple yet tasty way to use up leftover pork (I used air-fried Pork Tenderloin) and make a new dish out of it. The pork is juicy, the cheese is gooey and the sandwich turns out crispy and flavorful. I love this new fantastic way to turn your leftover meat into something delicious and satisfying.
If you’re new to the world of air fryers, you’re in for a treat. These kitchen gadgets work by circulating hot air to cook your food, creating that signature crispy texture that we all love without needing oil. Please allow me to recommend few of my favorite grilled cheese sandwich variations: the Air Fryer Steak Melt, the Air Fryer Tomato Grilled Cheese, and the Grilled Ham & Cheese. Trust me, each one offers a unique and delicious twist on the classic sandwich that you won’t be able to resist.
So let’s crank up that air fryer and cook the delicious grilled pork melt! I’m using Cuisinart Air Fryer Oven for all my Air Fryer grilled cheese sandwiches.
Gather your Ingredients
- Bread. You will need a slice of bread. A thicker bread will hold up better to the heat of the air fryer, ensuring that your grilled cheese stays intact. Additionally, the bread’s texture is important. A bread with a firm texture, such as sourdough or rye, will give your grilled cheese a nice crispiness. However, a softer bread like white or wheat will result in a softer, fluffier grilled cheese. I use sourdough or multi-grain.
- Pork. I used leftover Air-fryer pork tenderloin (sliced thin), and some cheese (we recommend cheddar or Swiss). Preheat your air fryer to 350 degrees Fahrenheit so it’s ready when you are. You can also use the Crispy Breaded Pork Chops. Which works great for this recipe,
- Cheese. Any of your favorite cheeses will do. I use Provolone, Swissh or Havarti. Swiss cheese provides a nutty and sweet flavor that pairs perfectly with the classic taste of buttered toast. Provolone cheese, on the other hand, is perfect if you like a creamier and milder taste. Both Swiss and provolone cheeses produce a delicious crust that gives your grilled cheese a satisfying crunch.
- Butter. Spreading a bit of butter (or mayo) on the outside of the bread takes your air fryer grilled cheese to the next level. This simple step adds a rich, buttery flavor and helps the bread get crispy and golden brown.
Instructions
Preheat your air fryer to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (177°C)
Assemble your pork sandwich. Top the bread with the sliced pork tenderloin (about ⅛ inch thick slice) and then cover with a slice of cheese.
Place in the preheated air fryer basket and cook for 5-6 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly. And the bread is crispy.
This will create that signature crispy texture on the bread and melt the cheese to perfection. Once the sandwich is finished cooking, remove it from the air fryer and serve hot.
Tips and Variations
Avocado. Please feel free to add some extra toppings to your Air fryer pork melt. I love to incorporate some creamy avocado before adding pork to your air fryer grilled cheese sandwich. The avocado not only adds a unique flavor profile but also helps keep the pork and cheese from sticking to the bread while inside the air fryer. This simple addition can take your ordinary pork grilled cheese sandwich to a whole new level of deliciousness.
Add some lettuce or tomato for added freshness. Or to spice things up, add some jalapeños or sriracha sauce. May I also recommend one of my favorites – Air fryer Jalapeno Melt? This sandwich has the crunch of the air fryer with the heat of jalapenos and the gooey goodness of melted cheese, delivering a flavor explosion with every bite.
To add some serious crunch to your next grilled pork sandwich, try this game-changing technique. The secret? Spread a little butter or mayo on the outside of the bread before cooking it in an air fryer. This simple trick will give your sandwich a deliciously crispy texture.

Notes
What bread to use? While you might be tempted to reach for regular white bread, it’s not always the best choice for this particular dish. Instead, opt for a heartier bread like sourdough or whole wheat that can hold up to the moisture from the pork and cheese without getting soggy or falling apart. These breads also offer a delicious, nutty flavor that complements the savory ham and oozy cheese to create the perfect sandwich.
Toppings.
