Glow Up with Homemade Facial Masks: Easy DIY Recipes for Radiant Skin

You all know I love me some skincare. But I never really thought to look into my fridge and pantry to create easy DIY face masks for glowing skin. Skincare can get expensive. And I DO believe it’s worth the price. However, why not try an at home mask with some friends, or rotate this in with your everyday skincare routine. With clean beauty being such a hot button right now, it doesn’t get any cleaner than this!

Well I suppose you’ll want to ensure these ingredients are organic or else it isn’t “super” clean. Whatever…

Either way, no matter your skin type, there’s a face mask recipe out there for you. Today’s recipe can be tweaked based on the ingredient benefit and skincare goals you’re looking to achieve.

Glowing Skin Face Mask Ingredients

The below are a few popular ingredients you can use in your very own at home DIY face mask for glowing skin. You’ll want to start with a base usually which could be avocado, yogurt or buttermilk, then add in additional ingredients. Here’s a few ingredients and the benefits they may have in your DIY mask.

AVOCADO

Avocado is a great ingredient and makes for a super easy base to start with. They’re packed with fatty acids and as we know from past posts like my face oil post, fatty acids are key to anti-aging. They help to plump the skin and moisturize.

TURMERIC

If you’re acne prone, this is a must ingredient for our at home DIY face mask. Turmeric is also an anti-inflammatory which can help to soothe irritated skin, psoriasis and acne scars. These components may help to give your skin a true glow!

YOGURT OR BUTTERMILK

You can swap out the avocado for yogurt as your base, or use both. The great thing about plain yogurt (yes keep it PLAIN people, no sugar or artificial sweeteners!) is that it has lactic acid in it. Hello! I pay good money for lactic acid in my skincare and it’s just been sitting in my fridge. Okay, so it isn’t as concentrated and potent as what’s in a bottle you bought from your favorite skincare line. But there is definitely lactic acid in yogurt and it can be a great addition to DIY mask recipes.

But if you’re looking for the exfoliating benefits, buttermilk has a higher lactic acid content. Lactic acid is a great exfoliator and also helps to reduce the appearance of pores. If you’re really looking for a good exfoliator, add coffee grinds or oatmeal to the mask and then massage the mask into your face after it has been sitting for 15 minutes.

RASPBERRIES OR BLUEBERRIES

Both have high anti-oxidants and can help to reduce scarring and can soothe skin. They’ll ask make your mask a pretty red or purple color.

COFFEE OR OATMEAL

To exfoliate, add either of these to your mask. Coffee grinds being more aggressive than oatmeal, so choose wisely based on skin types. If you’re sensitive, opt for oatmeal. Exfoliating helps to remove dead skin cells to reveal younger and more glowing skin. After your mask has been working on your skin, massage the coffee or oatmeal into your skin. It’ll help to exfoliate and also help to lift out dirt in your pores. Just placing oatmeal won’t work, you’ll have to use it as an exfoliant!

HONEY

Another anti-oxidant rich ingredient, honey! I only recommend using local, raw honey. The little bear at the grocery store won’t be packed with much, sadly. Honey can be used on its own for a mask. I love this idea of adding a tablespoon or so of it to damp skin in a thin layer to help unclog pores, hydrate and dry skin and provide anti-oxidants to your skin cells.

DIY Face Mask For Glowing Skin Recipe

There are so many combinations to choose from and it can be overwhelming. I like this below recipe as it uses some ingredients I always have on hand. It will help to exfoliate, hydrate and provide a boost of anti-oxidants. You can add in, or take out, whatever you like. You really can’t go wrong with any of the ingredients!

  • 1/2 cup of yogurt
  • a handful of berries, mashed
  • coffee
  • 1 tsp Turmeric

Mix all ingredients together and apply to your face. You can use a fun mask applicator brush like this one. Let it sit for 20 or 30 minutes. The great thing about this is since nothing is overly concentrated, you don’t have to worry about leaving a mask on for too long. Since this mask has an exfoliant in it (the coffee) before taking it off, use a little water and begin to exfoliate your face in a circular motion. Then remove with water and a washcloth.

That’s it! Enjoy hydrating, exfoliating and anti-inflammatory masks at home with what you have on hand. What mask combo will you whip up?
